About Aristotelous Square

Aristotelous Square is the central and most iconic square in Thessaloniki. Designed in 1918 by French architect Ernest Hébrard as part of the new city plan after the devastating 1917 fire. Hébrard’s plan drew inspiration from the city’s Byzantine past, restoring monumental scale to the centre.

The square connects the seafront (Leoforos Nikis and Thermaikos Gulf) to Egnatia street over about 250 metres. Two imposing neo-Byzantine buildings frame the square to the north and south, and the pedestrianised Aristotelous street continues to Plateia Dikastirion and the Roman Forum.

On Aristotelous you’ll find the historic Olympion cafe-cinema (hub of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival each November), seafront restaurants, 4-5 star hotels such as Electra Palace and Mediterranean Palace, and many shops in the side streets. It’s the starting point for any city visit.
