Kamara as the Heart of Historic Thessaloniki
Kamara is the informal center of old Thessaloniki, with the imposing Arch of Galerius (3rd century AD) in its middle. It’s where students from Aristotle University, locals, and tourists meet in cafés and bookshops.
The surrounding area is packed with Byzantine monuments, old churches, and pedestrian streets. The Rotunda, a cylindrical 4th-century structure that became a church and then a mosque, is 200 meters from the Arch. A bit further, you’ll find Hagios Demetrios, the city’s most important church.
What to See
Beyond the monuments, Kamara has cafés with rooftop terraces overlooking the Arch, small jazz bars on the parallel streets, and cultural centers like the Thessaloniki Municipal Cultural Center. The neighborhood is ideal for morning walks with coffee from Mikel or Cofix, and evening strolls through the historic alleys.
