About the White Tower
The White Tower is the iconic symbol of Thessaloniki, built in the 15th century on the city’s seafront by the Ottomans. Standing 34 metres tall and 23 metres in diameter, it had multiple lives: a fortified tower, a prison (once called “Tower of Blood”), and finally whitewashed in 1890 to acquire its current name.
Today it houses the White Tower Museum, a branch of the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Six floors of exhibitions tell the story of Thessaloniki from Byzantine times through the 20th century: multicultural society (Greeks, Jews, Ottomans), the great fire of 1917, the Asia Minor refugee influx, and the city’s evolution. The view from the top over the Thermaikos Gulf and the city skyline is exceptional.
Practical info: Hours typically 08:30-20:00 in summer, 08:30-15:30 in winter. Entry €4 (reduced €2), free for under-18s and on the first Sunday of each month November to March.
