About Kamara
Kamara, officially the Arch of Galerius, is a Roman monument from the 4th century AD and one of the most famous landmarks in Thessaloniki. It was built around 305 AD by Emperor Galerius to celebrate his victories over the Persians.
The arch was part of a larger Galerius complex including the Rotunda (a temple, today the church of Saint George) and the Palace of Galerius. The sculpted reliefs depict battle and triumphal-parade scenes in striking detail.
Today Kamara is a crossroads: where Egnatia street (the main commercial road) meets Pavlou Mela and Dim. Gounari. The area is full of cafes, restaurants, bookshops and student hangouts, as the Aristotle University (AUTH) is 5 min east.
